Fed. Circ. OKs Chicago Transit Authority’s Alice Patent Win

Law360, New York (October 18, 2017, 9:37 PM EDT) -- The Federal Circuit on Wednesday upheld a lower court’s ruling that four patents on mass transit fare payment technology asserted against the Chicago Transit Authority are invalid for claiming abstract ideas, over a passionate dissent arguing the ruling takes the Alice test too far.

In a 2-1 decision, the majority held that Judge Edmond E. Chang of the Northern District of Illinois correctly granted judgment on the pleadings to the transit authority in 2015 and held the patents owned by Smart Systems Innovations LLC are invalid...
