Financier Gets Out Of $50M 'Escape From Planet Earth' Suit

Law360, Los Angeles (February 6, 2013, 8:22 PM EST) -- A New York state judge on Tuesday dismissed a movie financier from a $50 million suit over The Weinstein Co. LLC's “Escape From Planet Earth,” saying the film's director hadn’t shown the company had interfered with a profit-allocation contract.

Judge Barbara J. Jaffee dismissed director Tony Leech’s motion for a declaratory judgment on his claims that a compensation contract for the film states Leech, producer Brian Inerfeld and Protocol Pictures should get first dibs on the box office profits instead of financier JTM Escape Co. Ltd.,...
