UK Worries Taboola, Outbrain Tie-Up Could Hurt Publishers

Law360 (June 26, 2020, 8:58 PM EDT) -- British competition authorities said Friday they want some concessions to ease antitrust worries before they let online content marketer Taboola gobble up rival Outbrain, saying the deal could hurt publishers.

The U.K. Competition and Markets Authority said it has already been investigating the tie-up and plans to start an in-depth, or "phase II," probe of the deal "unless the parties offer acceptable undertakings to address these competition concerns."

"Online advertising, including content recommendation, is a really important revenue stream for publishers, including news websites," Joel Bamford, CMA senior director of mergers, said in a Friday statement.
