What's Next For Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification

By Robert Metzger, Deborah Rodin and Eleanor Ross (December 21, 2020, 4:09 PM EST) -- The U.S. Department of Defense's new cyber interim rule took effect on Nov. 30, and changes are now reflected in Defense Federal Acquisition Regulations Supplement. On the same date, the comment period for the interim rule closed.

This rule affects tens of thousands of organizations that do business with the DOD. At least 20,000 companies soon will be required to self-assess their compliance with cyber requirements and submit their assessment scores to the Pentagon.

Many more companies will find themselves subject to the new Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification, or CMMC, program, which involves third-party assessment of cybersecurity. The DOD received more...
