Judge Barbier Earns Praise For Shrewd Handling Of BP Case

Law360, New York (March 3, 2012, 12:44 PM EST) -- U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier played a decisive role in leading BP PLC and plaintiffs’ attorneys to negotiate a $7.8 billion settlement before trial in the Deepwater Horizon multidistrict litigation, according to experts, who lauded his managerial skills.

Trial was set to begin Monday, but BP and the plaintiffs' steering committee announced late Friday night that they'd reached a settlement in principle that would resolve a majority of private claims in the case.
