In fact, in fiscal year 2011, the government missed its small business contracting goal for the 11th straight time. Despite these facts, with $91.5 billion in awards to small business in FY 2011, significant opportunities remain for small businesses to succeed. To prosper in the current environment, however, in which many predict increased competition and budget cuts will have a disproportionate impact on small businesses, these businesses must learn from the successes and failures of other firms.
