Texas Drops Nonprofit From Suit Over Sanctuary City Law

Law360, New York (June 16, 2017, 7:11 PM EDT) -- The state of Texas announced on Friday that it is voluntarily dismissing the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund from preemptive litigation over the state’s Senate Bill 4, which essentially bans so-called sanctuary cities that don’t cooperate with federal immigration enforcement.

The group’s exit leaves Austin and Travis County leadership and law enforcement officials as defendants in the state’s suit, which claimed the parties have opposed federal immigration enforcement and anticipated they would sue over the constitutionality of the law.
