In his three decades on the high court, Justice Kennedy was known for penning some of the most impactful decisions of modern times: Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, Obergefell v. Hodges and Ashcroft v. Iqbal. Justice Kennedy had become the swing vote of the Supreme Court over time, and his retirement starts the clock on a fierce political battle to confirm a replacement.
