Sony, Warner Get Amway 'Copyright Ambush' Suit Trimmed

Law360, San Francisco (July 18, 2014, 8:18 PM EDT) -- A Florida federal judge on Friday threw out Amway Corp.'s claims that Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group Corp. conspired to interfere with UMG Recordings Inc.'s agreement to notify Amway of any copyright violations by Amway distributors, finding Sony and Warner were part of that agreement.

U.S. District Court Judge Roy B. Dalton Jr. granted the record companies' motion to dismiss Amway and parent company Alticor Inc.'s allegations of tortious interference with a contract and conspiracy, finding that they weren't strangers to the 1998 agreement and that the conspiracy claim was dependent on the interference claim.
