Judge Axes Casino Patent Under Alice After PTAB Refused

By Ryan Davis (March 30, 2016, 10:40 PM EDT) -- A federal judge has invalidated an Everi Holdings Inc. patent related to casino cash processing equipment for claiming an abstract idea, saying she disagreed with a recent Patent Trial and Appeal Board decision rejecting the same argument by Everi rival NRT Technology Corp.

In a decision Friday, Judge Miranda Du of the District of Nevada said she "disagrees with the PTAB's threshold analysis" in its January decision not to institute an America Invents Act covered business method review of Everi's patent. The board said NRT failed to show the patent is likely invalid under the U.S. Supreme Court's Alice test....
