Heller Can't Take Ex-Partners' Fees, Calif. High Court Says

Law360, Los Angeles (March 5, 2018, 7:14 PM EST) -- The California Supreme Court ruled Monday that a dissolved law partnership is not entitled to profits from former partners’ continued work on hourly fee matters, in a long-fought battle stemming from the Heller Ehrman LLP dissolution.

Clarifying an area of partnership interests in response to a certified question from the Ninth Circuit, Associate Justice Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar wrote in a unanimous, 23-page opinion that under California law, a dissolved law firm has no property interest in hourly fee legal matters and therefore no interest in the profits...
