The Weeknd Ripped Off UK Songwriters' Work, Suit Says

Law360 (April 3, 2019, 9:54 PM EDT) -- A trio of British songwriters on Wednesday accused R&B singer The Weeknd of infringing their song to make his track "A Lonely Night," which appeared on his Grammy Award-winning album "Starboy."

Brian Clover, Scott McCulloch and Billy Smith claim in their lawsuit filed in California federal court that The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel M. Tesfaye, blatantly copied their song “I Need To Love” to make his own “A Lonely Night." The suit accuses Tesfaye, along with a number of business and musical partners, of direct copyright infringement and unjust enrichment.
