NC Swine Stench Sufferers Win Landmark $50M Jury Award

Law360 (April 26, 2018, 10:53 PM EDT) -- A North Carolina federal jury on Thursday awarded more than $50 million to neighbors of a 15,000-head hog farm owned by the subsidiary of a Chinese corporation, siding with residents who sued the farm owner for spraying urine and feces into the air to deal with waste.

According to the verdict, Murphy-Brown LLC, a subsidiary of WH Group Ltd.’s U.S.-based pork producer Smithfield Foods, owes each neighbor $75,000 in compensatory damages as well as $5 million in punitive damages.
