Judge Says Ex-NY Sen. Espada Must Prove He's Poor

Law360, New York (July 9, 2012, 6:19 PM EDT) -- A federal judge on Monday ordered former New York state Sen. Pedro Espada Jr., who was accused of bid rigging and stealing from a health network, to prove he is poor if he wants a government-paid lawyer in a separate criminal tax case.

U.S. District Judge William H. Pauley told Espada to immediately tell the government how much money he has if he expects taxpayers to pay for his defense. Espada, who has been dubbed a poster child for Albany corruption, was convicted in May 2011...
