Industry Advocate Attacks Telecommunications Mergers

Law360 (September 15, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- An association that advocates for a competitive telecommunications industry is using the divestiture requirements placed on the Alltel/Midwest Wireless merger to further object to the SBC/AT&T and Verizon/MCI mergers.

In court documents filed Thursday, COMPTEL called the Justice Department’s proposed remedies in the SBC/AT&T and Verizon/MCI mergers inadequate and done with no concern for the consumers likely to be injured.

“What is clear from an even superficial comparison of the two cases is that only one was done by the book,” COMPTEL said.
