Uber Drivers Denied Punitives In 'Safe Rides Fee' Row

Law360 (June 14, 2018, 4:35 PM EDT) -- A certified class of drivers alleging Uber improperly took a cut of their fares by instituting a $1 “safe rides fee” cannot collect punitive damages on their breach of contract claim against the ride-hailing giant, a California federal judge ruled Wednesday.

U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers ruled that drivers Matthew Clark, Ryan Cowden, Dominicus Rooijackers, Jason Rosenberg and the class are precluded from seeking punitive damages, so they cannot go diving into Uber’s financials.
