FCC's Sinclair-Tribune Protest Preempted DOJ Approval

By Kelcee Griffis (July 17, 2018, 9:00 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Justice was on track to approve Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc.'s merger with Tribune Media Co. before the head of the Federal Communications Commission recommended that his fellow commissioners challenge the deal, according to a source familiar with the matter.

The DOJ had planned to strike a consent decree within days, with the broadcast company agreeing to structural conditions that included about 10 divestitures, before FCC Chairman Ajit Pai indicated his agency would refer the deal for administrative review, according to the source. As both agencies must approve the acquisition, the FCC's announcement has mired the merger talks...
