Bellwether Jury Awards $3M In Cook Medical Vein Filter MDL

By Mike LaSusa (February 4, 2019, 10:03 PM EST) -- An Indiana federal jury on Friday awarded a woman $3 million in the third bellwether case in multidistrict litigation alleging Cook Medical Inc.'s vein filters injured patients, finding the defectiveness of the company's product was the reason for the woman's injury.

Tonya Brand won the seven-figure settlement Friday when the jury decided Cook Medical's defective "Celect" model vein filter broke apart in her body, requiring her to get surgery to remove it, according to a verdict form provided to Law360 by plaintiff's counsel.
