The number of patents that have been awarded to car makers such as Ford Motor Co. and Hyundai Motor Co. has risen sharply over the past five years, as the race to develop smart, connected and autonomous vehicles continues to heat up.

Old-school car companies have largely avoided patent battles in the past, long finding ways to co-exist....
