NYC Says Atty, Another Man Ran Immigration Bait-and-Switch
Law360 (April 19, 2019, 8:52 PM EDT) -- New York City's consumer watchdog on Thursday sued a Queens lawyer and another person over an alleged bait-and-switch scam targeting Ecuadorian clients needing immigration help.
In a state suit, the city Department of Consumer and Worker Protection said Angel Buitron pretended to be an experienced lawyer and promised sophisticated — and high-priced — immigration services, and used his own Ecuadorian heritage to attract clients from that country.
But Buitron has no legal training, despite his advertisements indicating otherwise, and acted as the "bait" to get cash-paying clients in the door before handing them off to Queens attorney Susana T. Abarca, according to...
