PTAB Nixes 2 Cellular Patents In Win For Mercedes-Benz

Law360 (January 19, 2021, 5:18 PM EST) -- The Patent Trial and Appeal Board has struck two mobile communications patents challenged by Mercedes-Benz, finding the disputed claims to be obvious due to earlier inventions.

In a trio of decisions Friday, the PTAB invalidated several claims in two Carucel Investments LP patents covering a mobile communications system with a "moving base station" that reduces the number of transfers from one radio channel to another. Mercedes-Benz had filed petitions for inter partes review of the patents at issue after being sued for infringement in district court.
