By Tom Zanki (March 26, 2021, 8:51 PM EDT) -- With persistent volatility and rampant chatter about short-selling pervading equity markets nowadays, more companies are finding at-the-market offerings to be an appealing way to raise capital while limiting the risks of selling shares during sudden downturns.

More than 430 companies used so-called ATM offerings in 2020, up nearly 25% from the prior year, according to analytics firm InsiderScore, which studies ownership and trading trends of public companies. ATM proceeds rose 67.5% over that time to reach $38.1 billion last year.
