DOJ Defends Itself Over Big Telecom Mergers

Law360 (December 14, 2006, 12:00 AM EST) -- The U.S. Department of Justice has shot back at the critics of its merger review process, rejecting accusations that it “made up” the legal, factual and economic support for its approval of the SBC/AT&T and Verizon/MCI mergers.

In court papers filed Thursday before the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., the DOJ said it had been candid and consistent, and that amici in the case were flat-out wrong when they said the point of the mergers was to “retard price competition.”
