Mediaset Ordered To Repay Millions In Illegal State Aid

Law360, New York (June 15, 2010, 1:32 PM EDT) -- Mediaset SpA, a television provider within Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's media empire, must return millions of euros in state subsidies that improperly favored terrestrial broadcasters over satellite operators, a European court ruled Tuesday.

The General Court of the European Union rejected Mediaset's appeal in its entirety, upholding the European Commission's 2007 decision that the Italian subsidies violated the EU's rules on state aid.
