EU Court Finds German Gambling Monopolies Illegal

Law360, New York (September 8, 2010, 4:10 PM EDT) -- The European Union's highest court has ruled that German state monopolies on sports betting and lotteries are incompatible with EU law, putting them at risk of being struck down by the nation's courts.

The European Court of Justice ruled Wednesday that Germany cannot block gambling companies from other European countries from operating within its borders while actively promoting lotteries run by the German government.
