Ex-NJ Mayor, Aide Convicted In Corruption Case

Law360, New York (October 8, 2010, 6:41 PM EDT) -- A federal jury on Friday convicted Joseph Vas, the former mayor of Perth Amboy, N.J., and his aide of mail fraud and lying to officials in their public corruption trial for misappropriating affordable housing funds and other allegations.

A jury in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey found Vas and his aide, Melvin Ramos, guilty in a scheme that netted Vas $290,000 when he flipped an apartment building to a buyer who used public funds to pay for the run-down property....
