FIFA Loses Bid To Block Free World Cup EU Broadcasts

Law360, New York (February 17, 2011, 5:11 PM EST) -- A European Union court ruled Thursday that members of the 27-nation bloc can bar FIFA from selling exclusive World Cup broadcasting rights to pay-television providers in certain situations.

Ruling on three cases, the EU's General Court held that Belgian and British laws mandating that the public be able to watch World Cup games, as well as European Championship broadcasts in the U.K., on free television did not violate EU law.
