White House IP Plan Courts Hollywood, Angers Techies

Law360, New York (March 16, 2011, 5:35 PM EDT) -- The technology industry Wednesday blasted an Obama administration plan to ramp up penalties for intellectual property crimes related to illegal digital media consumption such as streaming video or music content online — recommendations that the entertainment industry, however, praised.

The Computer & Communications Industry Association, whose members include Google Inc., Facebook Inc. and Microsoft Corp., said proposals by U.S. Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator Victoria Espinel were draconian and only benefited major entertainment companies.
