Smokers Knew Cigs Raise Cancer Odds: Philip Morris

Law360, New York (March 31, 2011, 4:07 PM EDT) -- Lawyers for Philip Morris USA Inc. urged a California federal judge Thursday to toss claims that Marlboro cigarettes are defective, while plaintiffs' attorneys fought to certify a class of smokers who want the company to bankroll a medical monitoring program.

The arguments came at a hearing on the tobacco giant's motion for summary judgment and the plaintiffs' class certification bid before Judge William Alsup of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, where the product liability case has been pending since May....
