Hartford Seeks To Avoid Covering Crate & Barrel Suits

Law360, New York (May 6, 2011, 2:58 PM EDT) -- Hartford Fire Insurance Co. hit the owner of retailer Crate & Barrel with a lawsuit Thursday in Illinois to avoid covering the company in California putative class actions contending it wrongly requested customers' zip codes during credit card transactions.

Hartford argues in the declaratory judgment complaint that it should not have to defend or indemnify Illinois-based Euromarket Designs Inc., which does business as Crate & Barrel, because the four underlying suits either do not claim damages that are covered by the insurance policy at issue or...
