Kaplan, West Denied $5M Deal In Bar Prep Scheme Suit

Law360, Los Angeles (August 9, 2011, 7:05 PM EDT) -- A California federal judge on Tuesday rejected a $5.2 million settlement in a class action accusing Kaplan Inc. and West Publishing Corp. of colluding in the bar exam prep business, ruling that the settlement was not large enough to reimburse customers who purchased test prep materials.

U.S. District Judge Manuel L. Real said the deal would have been unfair to class members who would have been reimbursed between $70 and $80 each. The class is comprised of approximately 165,000 people who purchased West's BAR/BRI review course...
