Staples Faces IP Suit Over Data Security Patent

Law360, New York (August 16, 2011, 4:52 PM EDT) -- Staples Inc. was hit with a lawsuit Friday in California federal court alleging it infringed a computer encryption technology patent owned by an exclusive licensee of the U.S. Navy.

Network Signatures Inc. accuses Staples of violating U.S. Patent Number 5,511,122, which is described in the complaint as creating a cryptographic signature to authenticate a computer over a network in order to safely and securely transmit data.

The company has previously filed dozens of suits against other companies, including Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Merck & Co....
