Scientists Say FCC Plan Won't Stop Piracy

Law360, New York (November 6, 2003, 12:00 AM EST) -- The "broadcast flag" system targeting online distribution of pirated programming, approved this week by the U.S. Federal Communications Commissions, simply will not work, computer experts told the U.K.'s New Scientist magazine.

On Tuesday, the FCC voted 5-0 for a rule to allow broadcasters to embed a digital code known as a "broadcast flag" into a program, which then could only be copied by a digital recording device equipped with technology that recognizes the flag.
