Authors Guild Targets 5 Universities Over Online Library

Law360, New York (September 12, 2011, 11:09 PM EDT) -- The Authors Guild sued digital content collective HathiTrust and five universities Monday, asking a New York federal court to stop the groups' plans to make copyright-protected texts digitally available in a large online library.

The Authors Guild, The Australian Society of Authors Ltd. and Canadian group Union des Ecrivaines et des Ecrivains Quebecois claim the University of Michigan, the University of California, the University of Wisconsin, Indiana University, Cornell University and HathiTrust will commit massive copyright infringement by making "orphan works" — copyrighted works whose rights...
