Herd Of Dairy Cos. Funded Cow Killings To Fix Prices: Suit

Law360, Los Angeles (September 27, 2011, 3:27 PM EDT) -- Members of animal rights group Compassion Over Killing brought a class action against the National Milk Producers Federation, Land O’Lakes Inc. and other dairy companies Monday, alleging a program that paid farmers to raise milk prices by killing cows violated antitrust laws.

Plaintiffs Matthew Edwards, Georgia Browne and Torah Montessori School filed the lawsuit in California federal court, claiming that a voluntary program called Cooperatives Working Together collected membership fees that were used to pay smaller farmers to cull their herds, raising milk prices earned by...
