Trends In Privacy Class Action Settlements

Law360, New York (October 18, 2011, 5:28 PM EDT) -- We live in an information age, where much of our personal information is stored and transferred via electronic means. To address concerns that such information may be transferred or disclosed without our consent, Congress has enacted federal statutes to protect the privacy rights of individuals. Several of these statutes include provisions authorizing private rights of action to redress privacy violations. Given the potential for privacy breaches to have an impact on large groups of individuals, many privacy lawsuits are brought as class actions.
