EC Gives Final Warning To State Gambling Monopolies

Law360, New York (June 27, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- European regulators have ordered Greece, Sweden and France to end state-run sports betting monopolies, threatening the countries with legal action if they refuse to comply.

The European Commission's Internal Markets regulator on Wednesday issued a reminder to the countries that if they do not change their gaming legislation to comply with EC standards, the Commission will take action in the European Court of Justice.

While the threats to France and Sweden represent final warnings, Greece received only an initial warning.
