Carrier IQ Faces Probes, Class Actions Over Tracking App

Law360, Washington (December 2, 2011, 1:40 PM EST) -- Carrier IQ Inc., developer of an application that covertly tracks smartphone users’ activities, was hit Thursday and Friday with calls from U.S. lawmakers for probes, new investigations in Europe, and putative consumer class actions in Illinois and California alleging it inappropriately collects data from phone users without permission.

U.S. Representative Edward Markey, D-Mass., asked the U.S. Federal Trade Commission on Friday to look into potentially unfair or deceptive business practices at Carrier IQ, expressing concerns about possible violations of consumers’ privacy.
