Open Road Strikes Back In E-Book Publishing Rights Row

Law360, San Diego (February 17, 2012, 5:12 PM EST) -- Heating up a battle over whether pre-Internet era publishing contracts include digital rights, Open Road Integrated Media LLP denied Thursday that it infringed HarperCollins Publishers LLC’s copyright by selling an e-book version of a 1972 children’s novel.

In response to HarperCollins’ complaint in New York federal court, Open Road asserts that “Julie of the Wolves” author Jean Craighead George kept the e-book publication rights under a 1971 contract with HarperCollins and expressly authorized Open Road to sell her novel as an e-book in a subsequent agreement....
