Tenet To Cough Up $43M For Overbilling Medicare

Law360, New York (April 10, 2012, 3:38 PM EDT) -- Tenet Healthcare Corp. will pay nearly $43 million to settle False Claims Act allegations that it admitted Medicare recipients for unnecessary inpatient procedures, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Tuesday.

The DOJ said Tenet had wrongly billed Medicare by admitting unqualified patients to so-called inpatient rehabilitation facilities, where people recovering from serious injury or illness receive intensive physical therapy. The $42.75 million payment is the largest government settlement involving inappropriate admissions to this type of facility, officials said.
