Elton John Accused Of Poaching Lyrics To '80s Hit 'Nikita'

Law360, New York (April 27, 2012, 5:12 PM EDT) -- Pop megastar Elton John and longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin were hit with a copyright infringement suit on Thursday in Illinois federal court over allegations that the duo stole the lyrics to their 1985 hit “Nikita” from a South African lyricist.

The lawsuit, which also targets music publisher Big Pig Music Ltd., alleges John and Taupin stole the lyrics from Guy Hobbs, who claims the duo’s song bears an undeniable similarity to his own ballad of Cold War love, titled “Natasha.”
