Classmates.com's $4.5M Privacy Deal Gets Reluctant Nod

Law360, New York (June 18, 2012, 2:15 PM EDT) -- A federal judge in Washington state on Friday grudgingly approved a $4.5 million settlement from the owner of high school yearbook site Classmates.com over alleged deceptive emails and privacy violations, despite concerns that the award was ineffective and provided nearly no relief to class members.

U.S. District Judge Richard A. Jones heavily criticized class counsel in his final order approving the agreement between Classmates Online Inc. and a class of 60 million plaintiffs and said it “only barely” met qualifications to be considered fair and reasonable....
