Pier 1's Jury Win Upheld In Gift Card IP Case

Law360, Philadelphia (August 29, 2012, 6:11 PM EDT) -- A Texas federal judge on Monday denied patent-holding company Alexsam Inc.'s bid for a new trial following a jury's 2011 decision finding that retailer Pier 1 Imports Inc. had not infringed on its intellectual property for gift card technology.

U.S. District Judge Michael Schneider found that there was enough evidence to underpin the Texas jury's finding that the two gift card systems in question differed substantially. The judge also dismissed Pier 1's motion seeking a finding that the patents were invalid — as the jury had ruled in favor of Pier 1 but had refused to say the patents were invalid....
