Chipotle Rounds Bills Up To Nearest Nickel, Suit Claims

Law360, New York (September 6, 2012, 4:48 PM EDT) -- Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. has been hit in California federal court with a proposed class action alleging the chain systematically overcharges customers by rounding up their bills to the nearest 5-cent increment.

The complaint, filed Aug. 31, cites an article printed earlier last week in The (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger that, in reporting the alleged scheme, quotes a Chipotle spokesman as saying the rounding was intended to keep lines moving by limiting the number of change combinations.
