Apple Loses Bid To Add To $1B Samsung Patent Verdict

Law360, New York (January 30, 2013, 3:54 PM EST) -- A California federal judge on Tuesday overturned a jury's ruling that Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.'s infringement of Apple Inc. smartphone patents was willful and rejected Apple's request to raise the jury's $1.05 billion damages award by $535 million.

Although she did not disturb the jury's finding that Samsung did in fact infringe Apple's patents, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh, who oversaw last summer's closely watched trial between the two tech giants, granted Samsung judgment as a matter of law that its infringement was not willful, and...
