Inside Trader Turned Cooperator Dodges Prison

Law360, New York (February 4, 2013, 6:13 PM EST) -- Karl Motey, a former hedge fund consultant who admitted to insider trading and then testified against other industry insiders, was sentenced Monday to one year of probation after a New York federal judge lauded his cooperation.

U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff said Motey's work with prosecutors had convinced him to spare Motey a prison sentence. Motey's testimony helped convince juries to convict Doug Whitman, founder of the hedge fund Whitman Capital LLC, and James Fleishman, a sales executive at defunct expert networking firm Primary Global...
