FTC Targets Marketing Cos., Sites Over Gift Card Text Scam

Law360, Chicago (March 7, 2013, 7:50 PM EST) -- The Federal Trade Commission has sued a slew of affiliate marketing companies for allegedly sending more than 180 million spam text messages to consumers as part of a gift card website scam, the agency said Thursday.

The FTC has lodged a total of eight complaints in Illinois, Texas, Georgia and California federal courts against 29 defendants, a group that includes the companies that allegedly sent the text messages and the operators of the websites the agency says deceptively lure visitors with false promises of free gift...
