AP Wins Copyright Fight Against News Aggregator

Law360, New York (March 21, 2013, 1:25 PM EDT) -- A New York federal judge on Wednesday sided with the Associated Press in its lawsuit claiming news aggregator Meltwater News U.S. violated copyright law by reprinting excerpts of AP articles without permission.

U.S. District Judge Denise Cote granted summary judgment for the AP, which had claimed the $100 million-a-year online clipping business was stealing content rather than fairly re-reporting news.

The judge said original content news outlets like AP provide a public service, and that Meltwater's business model directly endangered that policy objective.
