News Aggregators Should Brace For More Copyright Suits

Law360, New York (March 22, 2013, 7:58 PM EDT) -- A judge's decision this week that news aggregator Meltwater News U.S. was not covered by fair use when it reprinted excerpts of Associated Press stories opens the door to more litigation against services that simply cut and paste copyrighted content, attorneys say.

U.S. District Judge Denise Cote granted the AP summary judgment, concluding that Meltwater, which sends its subscribers excerpts of news articles based on the presence of certain words, is not protected fair use because it takes the most important parts of each AP story...
