$9.5M Kaplan Bar Prep Antitrust Deal Wins Initial OK

Law360, Los Angeles (April 15, 2013, 5:18 PM EDT) -- A California federal judge Monday preliminarily approved West Publishing Corp. and Kaplan Inc.'s $9.5 million settlement of a putative class action accusing them of colluding in the bar exam prep business, ruling the revised deal eased his concerns by nearly doubling the money going to bar exam takers.

In an oral ruling from the bench, U.S. District Judge Manuel L. Real held that the proposed settlement “allays the court's previous concerns” about an earlier $5.2 million tentative deal that he rejected.
